Daily Sudoku Challenge: How It Works and How to Get Faster

A daily sudoku is one puzzle, released once a day, that everyone plays. Because every solver gets the same grid, your time can be compared with everyone else's, and because there is only one, it is easy to turn into a habit: a few minutes with morning coffee or the last calm thing before bed. This guide covers how daily sudoku works in Sudoku Royale, from how the difficulty moves through the week to how mistakes and streaks are counted, and how to post faster times.

How the Daily Challenge works

A new Daily Challenge unlocks every day at midnight UTC. The app shows the unlock time in your local time zone, so in New York it arrives in the evening and in Tokyo in the morning. You can turn on a Daily Drop notification to hear when it is ready, or a single reminder at noon.

You play it solo on your own board. There is no time limit, but there is a clock, and it runs on the server. Your time starts when you open the puzzle and stops when you place the last number. If you leave halfway through, the clock keeps running, and when you come back you pick up the same board where you left it. This is what keeps the leaderboard fair: nobody can pause the clock to think.

The difficulty climbs through the week

The daily follows a weekly ramp. Monday is the gentlest puzzle and Sunday takes the most work, so a slow Sunday is normal and not a sign you are getting worse. The app labels each day so you know what to expect.

One detail most players never notice: every Daily Challenge can be solved with singles alone. The later puzzles are harder because the next move is better hidden and there are fewer of them at a time. None of them need pairs, X-Wings, or chains. If you know how to find hidden singles quickly, you have every technique you need for the whole week.

Mistakes, penalties, and unranked results

Each mistake adds 30 seconds to your time. The penalty shows live next to your clock, so you always know where you stand. You have three hearts. If you make a third mistake, your attempt becomes unranked: you can still finish, you still show up on the day's board, and your streak still counts, but you appear without a rank number. There are no hints in the Daily Challenge, since it would not be a fair race if some players had them.

The penalty changes how you should play. Thirty seconds is longer than most single moves take, so a guess that turns out wrong costs more than the time you would spend checking it. When you are not sure, look for a second reason the number goes there.

Streaks

Finish the daily puzzle to extend your streak. Miss a day and it starts again at one. The app shows your current streak and your best, and there is no streak freeze or repair, so a streak in Sudoku Royale means you really did play every day. An unranked finish still counts, which means a bad day with three mistakes never costs you the streak as long as you finish the board.

Leaderboards and sharing

Each day has its own leaderboard, split into Global, Country, and Friends. Rankings use your time plus penalties, and ranked results always sit above unranked ones. After you finish, the day's card shows your rank, the percentage of players you beat, and how many people have solved it so far. The result screen gives you a share card with your time, which is how most daily rivalries between friends start.

The archive: every past daily

Missed a day, or want more than one puzzle? The Daily tab has a calendar going back to Monday 5 January 2026, and every past puzzle is playable and ranks on that day's leaderboard. Each month shows a completion ring so you can see how many days you have filled in. It is a good way to practise weekend puzzles on a weekday.

How to get faster at daily sudoku

1. Scan by number, then by box. Take the digit that already appears most often and check every box where it is missing. On a singles-only puzzle this finds more moves than any other habit.
2. Follow the chain reaction. Each number you place can open a new single in the same row, column, or box. Look there before you go back to scanning the whole grid.
3. Use notes sparingly early in the week. Monday and Tuesday puzzles fall to naked singles, so full pencil marks mostly slow you down. Later in the week, notes in the two or three most crowded boxes are enough.
4. Never guess. With a 30-second penalty and a unique solution, a guess is almost always the slowest option.
5. Play the weekend puzzles from the archive. Saturday and Sunday are where times spread out, and practising them is the quickest way to move up the rankings.
