Stress Free Sudoku Alternatives: Calm Sudoku With Fewer Ads

Stress Free Sudoku is built around calm: no timers, no penalties, full undo and 200,000 puzzles at five levels. Its catch is the ads. Its App Store age rating notes advertising and the listing shows no purchase that removes them. If you want the same calm without ads, Sudoku by Mind The Frog (undo, one-time ad removal) is the closest match. Sudoku Royale has no ads and nothing to buy, but it shows a timer and has no undo, so it fits only if those do not bother you.

Boy Howdy Technology's app has been on the App Store since 2013 and has 10,395 US ratings. The reviews quoted on its own listing praise exactly what it set out to do: no timers, no penalty for tapping the wrong number, clear highlighting. Most players who look elsewhere are not unhappy with the puzzles. They want fewer ads, harder grids at the top end, or something to do each day beyond the next random puzzle.

How calm is each one?

"Stress free" means different things to different players. This table sticks to what makes a session feel pressured or relaxed: the clock, penalties for mistakes, a way back, and ads.

If the ads are the problem

Most apps that show ads sell a way to remove them. Stress Free Sudoku's listing has no in-app purchases at all, so there is no price you can pay to make the ads stop. That leaves two routes: an app that sells a one-time removal, or one without ads in the first place.

Sudoku by Mind The Frog is the most natural move. It is the same generation of app, small and quick, with undo and redo, automatic and manual notes, conflict highlighting and six levels up to "diabolical". Its Remove Ads purchase is $1.99. Its listing does not mention hints, so you lose Stress Free's hint button.

Brainium Sudoku keeps a hint (one that explains the reasoning) and has the most display options of the group: grid styles, backdrops, adjustable fonts, landscape play. Its ad removal is $11.99.

Good Sudoku carries no advertising label and sells one item, Full Game Unlock $4.99. It suits players who want to go deeper rather than stay relaxed; more on that below.

No ads and nothing to pay: Sudoku Royale, with two caveats

Sudoku Royale (our app) is free with no ads, no in-app purchases and no subscription. Practice gives you unlimited puzzles at six levels, with no mistake limit and no countdown, and a puzzle you leave is saved where you stopped. Notes clear themselves from the row, column and box when you place a number, which Stress Free players will recognize.

The two caveats matter for this audience in particular. First, a timer runs in the corner and cannot be hidden. It never ends a game, but if a visible clock is what you came to Stress Free to escape, read our sudoku apps without a timer first. Second, there is no undo. Sudoku Royale checks every number as you place it and rejects a wrong one, so you never build on a mistake, but you also cannot take back a correct move you regret. And unlike Stress Free's highlighting, that check cannot be switched off.

If Genius has stopped being hard

Stress Free's top level is Genius, and its listing gives the library sizes: the biggest share of its puzzles sit at Medium, Hard and Genius. Once Genius feels routine, you need an app whose top end asks for techniques beyond singles and pairs.

  • Sudoku Royale has Master and Extreme above Expert, each unlocked after a few solves at the level below. Its hardest puzzles call for patterns like X-Wing and Swordfish, and the Dojo drills each one until it is quick to spot.
  • Good Sudoku says its hardest grids need XYZ-Wings, Hidden Quadruples, Jellyfish and Swordfish, and it lays out which techniques each difficulty requires.
  • Mind The Frog tops out at Diabolical, which is a step up for many players, though its listing does not describe the techniques involved.

If you want a reason to open the app each day

Stress Free's listing has no daily puzzle. Sudoku Royale's Daily Challenge is one shared puzzle a day with a streak, a leaderboard with friends and the world, and an archive of past days. Be aware that it is the least "stress free" part of the app: it has three lives and adds 30 seconds per mistake. Mind The Frog, Brainium and Good Sudoku all list daily puzzles too.

When to stay with Stress Free Sudoku

  • You never want to see a clock. Stress Free has no timer anywhere. Sudoku Royale always shows one.
  • You want every helper to be optional. Its guidelines, number highlighting, conflict highlighting and note erasing can each be switched off.
  • Undo is how you think. Full undo lets you test a line and back out of it.
  • The ads do not bother you. Then the calm grid and the size of the library are hard to beat for the price of nothing.
