Sudoku Master Alternatives: No Ads, Lessons or Variants

The best alternative to Sudoku Master depends on why you are leaving. To get away from ads and premium plans, Sudoku Royale costs nothing and has none, while nerByte Sudoku and Sudoku by Mind The Frog keep full offline play and sell one thing only: ad removal. To learn techniques, try Sudoku Royale or Good Sudoku. For variants, Sudoku: Classic Puzzle Games adds killer, X-Sudoku and Hyper Sudoku. No app we track matches Sudoku Master's 16x16 grid.

Sudoku Master has a lot going for it: its listing promises full offline play, five levels up to Master, and 6x6, 9x9 and 16x16 grids. Before you switch, know which of those you rely on, because most alternatives drop at least one. Each section below starts from a reason people leave and names the app that fixes it, along with what you give up.

Leaving because of ads and premium plans

Sudoku Master's age rating on the App Store says it contains advertising. Apple lists its paid items as Sudoku Premium $7.99, No Ads $6.99, Sudoku Premium $39.99, Sudoku Premium $2.99, No Ads $14.99, Offer "Hints" $1.99: several No Ads and Sudoku Premium options at different prices, the cheapest ad removal being $6.99. If sorting out which of those you need is what pushed you away, these apps are simpler.

Sudoku Royale has no ads, no purchases and no subscription, and you do not need an account. The trade-off for Sudoku Master players is offline play: Practice works offline only with puzzles already downloaded, and the Daily Challenge, Dojo and hints need a connection. If you mostly play at home, Sudoku Royale is the cheapest way out, because it costs nothing at all.

nerByte Sudoku is the closest like-for-like swap if offline matters. Its listing says it is "offline playable without restrictions", supports landscape and portrait, and lets you change the number size and background colour. Ads go with one Sudoku No Ads purchase at $7.99.

Sudoku by Mind The Frog is the low-cost option (Remove Ads is $1.99). Its listing describes a fast, small app with unlimited grids on or offline, undo and redo, automatic or manual notes, and six levels from easy to "diabolical". You can keep ten puzzles going at once.

Sudoku by MobilityWare+ is part of Apple Arcade, so it has no ads if you already pay for that subscription. Our sudoku apps with no ads guide covers more in this group.

Leaving because you want to be taught, not just hinted

Sudoku Master's listing talks about structured training and smart hints, but it does not describe lessons. If you keep stalling at the same level, a teaching app helps more than more puzzles.

Sudoku Royale builds its hint around the technique. After about 90 seconds without progress in Practice, it points to a cell and names the pattern, say a hidden single or a pointing pair, and links the lesson, without giving you the number. The Journey takes you through 88 levels, one technique per chapter, and the Dojo drills patterns up to Swordfish and XY-Wing. It has no undo and no automatic notes.

Good Sudoku by Zach Gage reads your notes and answers to decide which technique to show you next, and its listing names techniques up to Jellyfish. It goes deeper than Royale on the hardest patterns; see Sudoku Royale vs Good Sudoku.

Sudoku Now! and nerByte Sudoku sit in between. Sudoku Now!'s listing promises smart hints that "teach solving techniques", notes that update themselves and unlimited undo; nerByte Sudoku gives step-by-step explanations for each hint. Both say they work offline. The beginner app guide compares teaching styles in more depth.

Leaving because you want different puzzles

Sudoku Master's 6x6 and 16x16 grids are unusual, and if the 16x16 board is what you love, think twice: none of the apps on this page lists it. If you want variety of a different kind, there are good options.

  • Sudoku: Classic Puzzle Games lists Killer Sudoku, X-Sudoku and Hyper Sudoku alongside classic puzzles, plays offline, and has step-by-step guides. It shows ads and sells a Sudoku Premium upgrade.
  • Killer Sudoku by Sudoku.com is a separate app just for killer puzzles. We compare it with the others in the best killer sudoku apps.
  • Sudoku by MobilityWare+ starts beginners on smaller puzzles before the full 9x9, which suits anyone who liked Sudoku Master's 6x6 as a warm-up.
  • Sudoku Royale is classic 9x9 only, with no variants. It is the right pick only if you want depth in one format rather than many formats.

For a guide to the formats themselves, read sudoku variants explained.

When to stay with Sudoku Master

If you play mostly offline, enjoy switching between 6x6, 9x9 and 16x16, and do not mind ads or paying once to remove them, Sudoku Master still covers more of that than any single alternative here. Our Sudoku Royale vs Sudoku Master comparison goes through the two apps feature by feature, and the comparisons hub lists every other page.
