Best Offline Sudoku Apps: What Really Works Without Wi-Fi

If you need every part of a sudoku app to work with no signal, nerByte Sudoku and Sudoku Master make the strongest claims: their listings say "offline playable without restrictions" and "full offline mode". Sudoku Royale works offline only in part. Practice puzzles you have already downloaded and Journey levels play without a connection, and a two-player game nearby runs over Bluetooth, but the Daily Challenge, the Dojo, hints and Belts need the internet. Below is what each app actually promises, and how to set any of them up before a flight.

What works without a connection

For the other apps, the offline column quotes their own App Store listing. A listing that says "offline" rarely says which parts, so "not stated" means the developer does not say, not that it fails.

Sudoku Royale offline, part by part

We would rather you know this before boarding than find out at 30,000 feet:

• Practice: works offline with the puzzles already downloaded for the level you play. When those run out, the app asks you to connect to fetch more. There is no mistake limit and no countdown, so it is the mode to lean on while traveling.
• Journey: the 88 levels that teach a technique per chapter play offline once the map has loaded at least once.
• Play Nearby: if the person next to you also has Sudoku Royale, you can play a local game over Bluetooth without any internet. It is unrated and entirely optional.
• Needs a connection: the Daily Challenge, the Dojo and lessons, hints, Belts and online matches.

The missing hint is the one that matters most mid-puzzle. Sudoku Royale's hint names a technique and links to a lesson, and it needs a connection. Offline you solve on your own, so pack a level you can finish without help.

The apps that say they are fully offline

nerByte Sudoku lists "Offline playable without restrictions" and explanatory hints with step-by-step instructions. Sudoku Master says it plays "fully offline" and calls this "ideal for travel"; it also offers 6x6 and 16x16 grids. Sudoku Now! says "no internet required" and lists over 20,000 puzzles with unlimited undo. Sudoku by Mind The Frog promises unlimited grids "on or offline" and describes itself as small on storage.

OAKEVER's Sudoku: Brain Puzzle Games lists "Full Offline Support"; its listing also advertises real-time multiplayer tournaments, which by their nature run online. Sudoku: Classic Puzzle Games says no internet or wi-fi is required. Meowdoku says "Play Offline Anytime", but its listing describes a cat-placement logic puzzle, not classic 9x9 sudoku.

Before a flight: a five-minute checklist

1. Test in airplane mode at home. Turn it on, open the app, start a puzzle. This tells you more than any listing.
2. Open the modes you will use while you are still online. In Sudoku Royale, start a Practice puzzle at your usual level and open the Journey map once, so both are ready.
3. Play today's daily puzzle before you board. In Sudoku Royale it needs a connection, and a streak is easier to keep at the gate than to rebuild later.
4. Update the app on wi-fi. A pending update can ask to install at the worst moment.
5. Traveling with someone? iPhones let you turn Bluetooth back on in airplane mode, which is all Sudoku Royale's Play Nearby needs.

Where another app is the better pick

• You want hints with no signal. Sudoku Royale's hints need a connection. nerByte and Sudoku Now! list hints and say they play offline.
