Best Sudoku Apps for Seniors: Big Numbers, No Ads

For an older player, or anyone whose eyes tire of small print, the best sudoku app is one that is easy to read, never interrupts with a pop-up ad, and does not ask for an account before the first puzzle. Sudoku Royale covers the last two completely: no ads at all and guest play from the first launch. Its board digits grow with the board, so they are large on an iPad, but they do not follow the iPhone text-size setting. If adjustable number size matters most, Brainium Sudoku's listing offers it, at the cost of ads unless you pay.

What makes an app comfortable to play

Four things decide whether a sudoku app is pleasant or a chore: numbers you can read without squinting, no ads jumping in between puzzles, no sign-up wall, and input that does not punish a slightly off-target tap. Here is how the six apps compare, using each listing's own claims.

Reading the board

On an iPhone, a 9x9 grid has to fit 81 cells across a narrow screen, so number size is the first thing to check. Brainium's listing mentions "light or dark grid fonts with adjustable size". Sudoku: Classic Puzzle Games lists Larger Text, Dark Interface, Differentiate Without Color Alone, Sufficient Contrast in the accessibility section Apple shows on its App Store page, which is the developer's own statement that it supports the system's larger text setting. Stress Free Sudoku promises "beautiful, easy to read numbers" and guidelines that highlight the current row and column.

Sudoku Royale is honest to describe in two halves. Most of its text follows the iPhone's text size setting, but the digits on the board scale with the size of the cell instead. That works in its favor on an iPad, where the board fills the screen and the numbers are big without touching a setting (see the best iPad sudoku apps). On a small iPhone, raising the text size will not make the board digits larger. Highlight Same Number, in Settings, lights up every matching digit, and the Dark theme cuts glare in the evening.

No ads, no account

A full-screen ad between puzzles is confusing for someone new to an app: it can look like the game has ended, and the close button is often tiny. Brainium and Sudoku.com show ads by default and sell Remove Ads $11.99 and Sudoku.com No Ads $14.99 to remove them. Stress Free Sudoku's App Store age rating notes advertising, and its listing shows no paid way to remove it. Sudoku: Classic Puzzle Games sells a premium subscription (Sudoku Premium $4.99, Sudoku Premium $39.99) that its listing says removes ads. Sudoku by MobilityWare+ has none, because it is part of Apple Arcade, which is a monthly subscription of its own.

Sudoku Royale has no ads, no in-app purchases and no subscription, so there is no purchase screen to tap by accident either. It does not ask for an email or a password: the app starts as a guest. Signing in is optional and only matters if you want progress on a second device. If you are setting it up for a parent, that means you can install it, open Practice on Easy and hand the phone over.

Entering numbers

Stress Free Sudoku describes a "dual-keypad input system": tap a cell, then mark an answer or a pencil mark, with pencil marks erased automatically as you fill answers. Sudoku Royale offers several ways in. The simplest is to tap a cell and pick a number from a pop-up. Some players find it easier to choose a number first and then tap every cell it belongs in; the number-first versus cell-first guide explains both. Notes are cleared automatically from the row, column and box when you place a number.

Every number is checked the moment you place it, and a wrong one is rejected rather than left on the board to cause trouble ten moves later. In Practice there is no mistake limit and no countdown. Two limits to know: there is no undo button, and a small timer shows in the corner and cannot be hidden. If a visible clock makes puzzles feel like a test, Stress Free Sudoku, whose listing promises "no timers at all", is the better fit.

Where another app is the better pick

  • Number size on iPhone is the priority. Brainium's adjustable font size, or Sudoku: Classic Puzzle Games with Larger Text support.
  • No clock, and undo. Stress Free Sudoku lists both.
  • Color-blind support. Sudoku Royale has no color-blind mode. Sudoku: Classic Puzzle Games lists Differentiate Without Color Alone.
  • A gentler start. Sudoku by MobilityWare+ says it begins with smaller puzzles before the full 9x9, if you have Apple Arcade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which sudoku app has the biggest numbers?

On an iPad, Sudoku Royale's board fills the screen and its digits scale with the cells, so they are large by default. On iPhone, Brainium Sudoku's listing offers adjustable grid font size, and Sudoku: Classic Puzzle Games lists Larger Text support. Sudoku Royale's board digits do not follow the iPhone text size setting.

Is there a sudoku app with no pop-up ads?

Sudoku Royale has no ads of any kind and nothing to buy. Sudoku by MobilityWare+ is also ad-free, but it needs an Apple Arcade subscription. Brainium Sudoku and Sudoku.com show ads unless you buy their one-time ad removal.

Do I need to create an account to play Sudoku Royale?

No. Sudoku Royale starts as a guest. Sign in with Apple, email or Game Center is optional, and only useful for keeping progress across devices.

Which sudoku app has no timer?

Stress Free Sudoku's listing says it has no timers at all. Sudoku Royale shows a timer in the corner that cannot be hidden, though Practice has no countdown and no mistake limit.

Can I undo a mistake in Sudoku Royale?

There is no undo button. Instead, every number is checked as you place it, and a wrong number is rejected, so a mistake never stays on the board.

What is a good sudoku app to set up for a parent?

Look for no ads, no sign-up and a readable board on the device they use. Sudoku Royale needs no account and has no ads, and on an iPad its numbers are large. If they mainly use an iPhone and need larger digits, Brainium Sudoku's adjustable font size is worth the one-time ad removal.
