Few brain game apps can show they are ad-free. Of the 10 other apps checked here, 8 carry an advertising note in their App Store age rating, including the big training apps Elevate, Peak, Impulse and MindPal. Lumosity and Good Sudoku have no advertising label on their listings, which is a good sign but not proof. If you want a logic game you can be sure about, Sudoku Royale has no ads and nothing to buy, and Good Sudoku sells a one-time unlock instead of a subscription.
"Brain games" covers three different things on the App Store: training apps built around short daily workouts, trick puzzle games full of riddles and visual gags, and classic logic puzzles. They make money in different ways, and that decides how many ads you see.

How we checked for ads
We did not play every app for a week counting ads. We read each US App Store listing. Developers can declare "Contains: Advertising" in the age rating box, and some sell an item that removes ads, which means the free version has them. If neither appears, we say "no advertising label on its listing". Apple does not check that label for every app, so its absence tells you less than its presence. The one app we can vouch for directly is our own.
| App | Kind of game | Advertising noted on listing | Ad removal item listed | What it mainly sells |

| Peak | Brain training workouts | Yes | None listed | Peak Pro subscription |
| Lumosity | Brain training workouts | No advertising label | None listed | Lumosity Premium subscription |
| Impulse | Brain training and self tests | Yes | None listed | Subscription after a 3-day trial |

Brain training apps: subscriptions first
Elevate, Peak, Lumosity, Impulse and MindPal all work the same way: a free tier with a few games or a daily workout, and a subscription that unlocks the rest. Their listings describe the size of the library (Elevate and Lumosity list 40+ games, Peak 45+, MindPal 40 games and 1,000 levels) and personalized daily plans with progress tracking.
These listings also describe what their games are meant to improve. We do not evaluate those claims here, and this page makes none of its own. What we can compare is how they charge and what their listings say about ads.
- Elevate mixes reading, writing, vocabulary and everyday math games with memory and focus games. Its paid items are subscriptions.
- Peak sells Peak Pro and includes quick "Coffee Break" workouts under five minutes, per its listing.
- Lumosity starts with a free 10-minute Fit Test and sells Lumosity Premium. It is the only training app here with no advertising label on its listing. That is promising, but the label is declared by the developer, so treat it as a likely answer rather than a certain one.
- Impulse adds IQ, personality and emotional intelligence tests to its games. Its listing describes the 3-day trial as having "no ads, no interruptions", while its age rating still notes advertising.
- MindPal lists its own prices in the description: monthly, yearly and lifetime Pro plans.
Trick puzzle games: ads you can pay to remove
Brain Test, Brain Out, Braindom and IQ Boost are a different kind of game: one-screen riddles where the answer is usually hidden in the wording or the picture. They are fun in short bursts and great to pass around with friends. All four note advertising, and every one of them sells a "Remove Ads" item, often bundled with hints or tips. Brain Test's listing also offers a weekly VIP subscription that includes no ads. If you like these, buying the ad removal in the one you play most is the realistic route to an ad-free version.
Logic puzzles: the clearest answer
Sudoku Royale
Our app, so read this with that in mind. Sudoku Royale has no ads, no in-app purchases and no subscription; there is no ad code in it. It is classic 9x9 sudoku with six levels from Easy to Extreme, a Daily Challenge with streaks and a leaderboard, and a Dojo of timed drills for spotting patterns quickly. A skills radar tracks speed, accuracy and consistency from your games. That is a game statistic, not a measure of anything outside the game.
It is one kind of puzzle, not forty. If variety is what you want from a brain game, it will feel narrow. It is iPhone and iPad only, and live matches against other players are an optional extra you can ignore.
Good Sudoku
Zach Gage's sudoku has no advertising label on its listing and sells a Full Game Unlock for $4.99. Its hint system looks at your answers and notes and points you to the next technique, its listing says its hardest puzzles need techniques like Swordfish and Jellyfish, and it has three daily modes. Our Sudoku Royale vs Good Sudoku page compares the two teaching approaches.
When a brain training app is the better pick
- You want variety. Memory, word, math and attention games in one app. A sudoku app gives you one puzzle, done well.
- You want a five-minute routine. Short guided workouts are what these apps are designed around.
- You want word or language games. Elevate and MindPal list them; sudoku has none.
- You play on Android. Elevate, Peak and Lumosity are on Android; Sudoku Royale is not.
The short version
If no ads matters more than variety, a logic puzzle is the safest choice: Sudoku Royale is free with no ads, and Good Sudoku is a one-time purchase. If you want a training app, check the age rating and the in-app purchase list on the listing before you subscribe. Frequently Asked Questions
Which brain game apps have no ads?
Sudoku Royale has no ads and no purchases. Of the other apps we checked, Lumosity and Good Sudoku have no advertising label on their App Store listing. The rest note advertising.
Does Lumosity have ads?
Its App Store listing has no advertising label, but that label is declared by the developer, so it is not proof. Lumosity makes its money from the Lumosity Premium subscription.
Is Elevate free?
Elevate is free to download, and its paid items are subscriptions. Its App Store age rating notes advertising.
Are there brain games without a subscription?
Yes. Sudoku Royale has nothing to buy at all. Good Sudoku sells a one-time Full Game Unlock for $4.99. Trick puzzle games like Brain Out and IQ Boost sell one-off ad removal and hint packs rather than subscriptions.
How can I tell if an app has ads before downloading it?
On the App Store listing, look for 'Contains: Advertising' in the age rating section and for items like 'Remove Ads' or 'No Ads' under In-App Purchases. Either one means the free version shows ads. If neither is there, the app may still show ads, because the label is self-declared.
Is sudoku a brain game?
It is a logic puzzle: you fill a 9x9 grid so each row, column and box has the digits 1 to 9 once, using deduction and no arithmetic. App stores often file it under brain games. We make no claims about what it does for your brain beyond being a good puzzle.
