Best Calm Puzzle Games: No Timers, No Lives, Few Interruptions

The calmest puzzle apps are the ones with no clock to beat, no lives to lose and nothing that cuts in between rounds. By their own listings, Vita Mahjong (tile matching, can be played without a timer), Blockudoku and Number Match (no time limit) and Stress Free Sudoku (no timers at all) come closest on pace, but all of them show ads. Sudoku Royale is the one app here with no ads at all; a small timer does show in its corner, without a countdown.

"Relaxing" is on nearly every puzzle listing, so the word alone tells you nothing. What makes a game calm in practice is more specific, and you can check most of it before you download. This page compares apps across five kinds of puzzle on those specifics. If you only want sudoku, the most relaxing sudoku apps page goes deeper on that one game.

Four things that break the calm

  1. A clock. A countdown turns a puzzle into a race. Even a timer that only counts up nudges some people to hurry.
  2. Lives or a mistake limit. If three slips end the game, every move carries a little dread.
  3. Interruptions. A full-screen ad between rounds, a sale pop-up or an event banner pulls you out of the quiet.
  4. An ending you cannot control. In block puzzles the game deals the pieces, and a run can end because the next shape does not fit. In mahjong or sudoku you can always work your way out.

Ads: the one most of them share

Of the 7 other apps here, 7 show ads according to their listings. Vita Mahjong, Nonogram.com, Number Match and Blockudoku sell a one-time item to remove them. Woodoku, Arcadia Zen Math and Stress Free Sudoku note advertising in their age rating without a removal item on the listing. If you settle on one of these games for the long run, the removal purchase is usually the single best thing you can do for its calm. The picks, by kind of puzzle

Tile matching: Vita Mahjong

Its listing describes "a calm, easy pleasure, mentally engaging without pressure", large tiles and text, the option to play without a timer or score pressure, and full offline support. Hints, undo and shuffle are free props, so a board never truly beats you. It also sells weekly, monthly and yearly subscriptions alongside its ad removal, which is worth knowing before you tap any offer. Our Vita Mahjong alternatives page compares it with the closest options.

Picture logic: Nonogram.com

You fill squares from number clues and a picture appears. Its listing pitches it as a way to relax after a busy day and calm your mind. The catch for a calm player is the lives system: a mistake costs a life, and its listing mentions extra lives rather than none at all. It also runs tournaments and seasonal events, which you can ignore. More in the Nonogram.com alternatives.

Number pairs: Number Match

Cross out equal pairs or pairs that add up to 10 until the board is empty. "No time limit, so no rush, just relax", says its listing, and when you run out of moves you can add extra lines and keep going. That makes it one of the gentlest games here. See the Number Match alternatives for similar games.

Block puzzles: Blockudoku and Woodoku

Both are calm in pace (Blockudoku's listing says there is no time limit) but not in structure: each round ends when the board fills, so there is always a little tension near the end. Woodoku says it plays offline. If you like the feel but want a game you cannot lose to bad luck, a logic puzzle is the next step.

Math crosswords: Arcadia Zen Math

Fill in the blanks so every equation works. The listing promises a calming background and large numbers, and offline play. Its daily challenge is about beating your best speed, so skip that mode if speed is what you are avoiding.

Sudoku: Stress Free Sudoku and Sudoku Royale

Sudoku has no luck in it: every puzzle can be solved by reasoning, and nothing ends the game but you finishing it. Stress Free Sudoku is built around calm on paper: no timers at all, full undo, and highlights you can switch off one by one. Its age rating notes advertising.

Sudoku Royale is our app. It is the only one on this page with no ads and nothing to buy, so nothing interrupts a puzzle. Practice has no mistake limit and no countdown, and a wrong number is simply rejected rather than counted against you. Two things are less calm: a timer counts up in the corner and cannot be hidden, and there is no undo. The Daily Challenge, if you play it, has three lives, after which the run continues unranked. There are light and dark themes, separate music and sound toggles, and it respects Reduce Motion. Download Sudoku Royale if a visible clock does not bother you; if it does, our sudoku apps without a timer page compares the apps that let you play without one.

Where Sudoku Royale is not the calm pick

  • You want no clock on screen at all. Stress Free Sudoku and Vita Mahjong say you can play without one.
  • You want to take moves back. Vita Mahjong and Stress Free Sudoku have undo; Sudoku Royale does not.
  • You want something lighter than logic. Matching tiles or pairs asks less of you at the end of a long day than a hard sudoku.
  • You play on Android. Sudoku Royale is iPhone and iPad only.

Making any puzzle app calmer

Turn off sound effects and keep the music if it helps. Use the dark theme in the evening. Skip the daily leaderboard modes and events if ranking makes you rush. Turn on Do Not Disturb so notifications do not land on the board. And if ads are the problem, pay once in the game you play most rather than switching between free ones. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most relaxing puzzle game on iPhone?

It depends on what stresses you. For no clock and no way to lose, Number Match and Vita Mahjong are the gentlest, both with ads. For no ads at all, Sudoku Royale is free with nothing to buy, though a small timer shows. Stress Free Sudoku has no timers and full undo, with ads.

Which puzzle games have no timer?

By their App Store listings: Stress Free Sudoku has no timers at all, Vita Mahjong can be played without one, and Blockudoku, Number Match and Playdoku's Classic mode have no time limit. Sudoku Royale has no countdown in Practice, but its timer always shows.

Which puzzle games have no lives?

Sudoku Royale's Practice mode has no mistake limit; a wrong number is rejected and you carry on. Number Match lets you add extra lines when you run out of moves. Nonogram.com uses lives and offers extra ones after a mistake.

Are block puzzles like Woodoku relaxing?

The pace is relaxed, since there is no clock, but each round ends when no piece fits, so luck decides part of it. If that ending is what stresses you, a puzzle you can always solve by reasoning, like sudoku or nonograms, is calmer.

Is sudoku relaxing?

For many people, yes: it has no luck and no time limit unless the app adds one, and you can stop and come back. Easy and Medium puzzles are calm; Expert and harder ones are absorbing rather than relaxing.

Do calm puzzle games have ads?

Most free ones do. Of the apps on this page, 7 of 7 show ads per their listings, and 4 sell a one-time removal. Sudoku Royale has no ads and no purchases.
