Best Brain Games for Seniors: Large Print Puzzle Apps Compared

If small print is what makes most puzzle apps hard work, start with the apps that say plainly that they are built big: Vita Mahjong (large tiles and text, per its listing) and Arcadia Zen Math (large numbers). For sudoku, Sudoku: Classic Puzzle Games is the only app here that declares Larger Text support on its App Store page, and Sudoku by Mind The Frog promises big buttons. Sudoku Royale has no ads to squint at and needs no account; its board digits are large on an iPad but do not follow the iPhone text size setting.

This page is about readability and ease of use, not age. Plenty of people in their seventies play hard puzzles on a phone without a second thought, and plenty of thirty-year-olds want bigger numbers. What the apps below have in common is that their listings say something concrete about being easy to see and easy to tap. Our sudoku apps for seniors page covers sudoku alone; this one spans mahjong, math puzzles and sudoku.

What the listings say about readability

Apple now lets developers declare accessibility features in a section of the App Store page: Larger Text, Dark Interface, Sufficient Contrast, VoiceOver and others. It is new and voluntary, so most apps have left it empty. Of the 9 apps we checked for this page, only Crossmath and Sudoku: Classic Puzzle Games declare anything there. So the table also quotes what each description promises.

Mahjong and math: built big

Vita Mahjong makes size its selling point: "large, easily readable tiles and text", a clean interface, and support for both phone and iPad. You can play without a timer, and hints, undo and shuffle are free, so a misplaced tap is easy to recover from. It shows ads and sells Mahjong Ads Remove for $5.99, plus subscriptions; see the Vita Mahjong alternatives if those bother you.

Arcadia Zen Math is a math crossword with "a larger design on numbers for a better view of the board", a calming background, offline play and hints. Its maker lists Arcadia Mahjong and Arcadia Dominoes in the same series. Its age rating notes advertising, and its listing shows no purchase to remove the ads. Crossmath is the same kind of puzzle with a choice of four difficulty levels. Its accessibility section lists Dark Interface, and its description does not mention large print.

Sudoku with readable boards

A 9x9 sudoku grid packs 81 cells onto a phone screen, so size matters more here than in most puzzles. Sudoku: Classic Puzzle Games declares Larger Text, Dark Interface, Differentiate Without Color Alone, Sufficient Contrast on its listing, the fullest set of any app on this page. It shows ads and sells Sudoku Premium $4.99, Sudoku Premium $39.99. Sudoku by Mind The Frog describes itself as having no distractions: big buttons, no long intros, undo and redo, and customizable display settings. Its listing sells Remove Ads $1.99.

Sudoku Royale is ours. It has no ads, no purchases and no subscription, so there is no full-screen ad to mistake for the end of a game and no offer to tap by accident. It needs no account or password: it opens as a guest. Most of its text follows the iPhone's text size setting, but the digits on the board scale with the board itself. On an iPad that makes them big without any setting; on a small iPhone, turning up the text size will not enlarge them. Its listing does not declare any accessibility features yet. It has Light and Dark themes, a Highlight Same Number option, and several ways to enter a number, including tapping a cell and choosing from a pop-up. There is no colour-blind mode and no undo; a wrong number is rejected the moment you place it, so mistakes never pile up. Practice has no mistake limit, and its levels start at Easy. What about brain training apps?

Lumosity, Elevate, Peak are the best-known brain training apps: short daily workouts across many small games, paid for with a subscription. Their listings say a lot about what the games target and little about readability, and none of them declares accessibility features on its App Store page. They also make claims about memory and attention that we do not evaluate, and this page makes no such claims for any app, ours included. If variety in short bursts appeals more than one puzzle at length, they are worth a look; check the subscription terms first. The brain games without ads page compares how they charge.

When another app is the better pick than Sudoku Royale

  • You want the board to follow your text size. Sudoku: Classic Puzzle Games declares Larger Text support.
  • You want undo. Mind The Frog and Vita Mahjong both list it.
  • You want something other than sudoku. Vita Mahjong and Arcadia Zen Math are built large from the start.
  • You need a colour-blind setting. Sudoku Royale has none. Sudoku: Classic Puzzle Games declares Differentiate Without Color Alone on its App Store page.

Making any puzzle app easier to read

On iPhone, Settings, then Display & Brightness, has Text Size and Display Zoom; Display Zoom enlarges everything, including game boards that ignore the text size. Settings, then Accessibility, then Zoom, lets you magnify any part of the screen. An iPad is the simplest fix of all for small grids. Frequently Asked Questions

Which puzzle apps have large print?

By their App Store listings, Vita Mahjong has large tiles and text, and Arcadia Zen Math has large numbers. Sudoku: Classic Puzzle Games declares Larger Text support in Apple's accessibility section, and Sudoku by Mind The Frog promises big buttons. Sudoku Royale's board digits grow with the board, so they are large on an iPad.

Do brain games help with memory?

We make no claims about that for any app, including our own. Some listings describe what their games are meant to improve; we do not evaluate those claims. Pick a game because you enjoy it.

Which brain game apps have no ads?

Sudoku Royale has no ads, purchases or subscription. Of the other 5 apps on this page, 5 show ads per their listings, and 2 (Vita Mahjong, Sudoku by Mind The Frog) sell a one-time removal.

Can I set up a puzzle app for a parent without an account?

Yes, with Sudoku Royale: it starts as a guest, with no email or password. Signing in is optional and only matters for moving progress to another device.

How do I make the numbers bigger in a puzzle game on iPhone?

Try the app's own settings first. If the board does not follow your text size, turn on Display Zoom in Settings, Display & Brightness, which enlarges everything on screen, or play on an iPad.

What does Apple's accessibility section on the App Store mean?

It is where a developer states which accessibility features its app supports, such as Larger Text, Dark Interface or VoiceOver. It is voluntary, so an empty section does not mean an app is hard to use, only that the developer has not filled it in.
