Best Puzzle Games for iPad: Grids, Tiles and Brain Trainers

Most popular puzzle and brain apps run on iPad, but a few do not, and only a few say anything about the bigger screen. Of the 10 apps checked here, Impulse is not listed for iPad on the App Store. For a puzzle that gains the most from an iPad, pick a grid or tile game: Vita Mahjong says it is optimized for iPad, and Nonogram.com and sudoku boards simply get bigger. Sudoku Royale is a universal app that rotates on iPad, with no ads.

An iPad changes puzzles more than most games. A nonogram or sudoku grid that fills a phone screen edge to edge has room to breathe, tiles are easier to tell apart, and you can prop the tablet on a stand and play with a coffee in the other hand. This page covers puzzle and brain apps of several kinds. For sudoku only, the best sudoku apps for iPad page goes into landscape layouts and keyboards app by app.

"Nothing specific" means the description does not mention iPad, though Apple lists the app for it. It runs; the developer just does not promise anything about the layout.

The one that is not on iPad

Impulse, a brain training and self-test app, is not listed for iPad: its Compatibility section names iPhone and Apple Vision only. If you want a training app on a tablet, Elevate, Lumosity and Peak are. Peak also lists Apple Watch, the only app here to do so. All of the training apps sell subscriptions; the Impulse alternatives page compares them, and we make no claims about what any of them do for your brain.

Puzzles that use the screen best

Tiles: Vita Mahjong

Mahjong solitaire layouts stack tiles in layers, and on a phone the small symbols can blur together. Vita Mahjong is the only app here whose description talks about the tablet directly: "full pad and phone support" and large, easily readable tiles. It plays offline and lets you play without a timer. It shows ads and sells subscriptions and an ad removal; the Vita Mahjong alternatives page looks at those.

Grids: Nonogram.com and sudoku

Nonograms are the puzzle that gains most from an iPad: number clues run along every row and column, so a large picture puzzle on a phone means tiny print or constant zooming. Nonogram.com's listing says it has thousands of puzzles at several difficulty levels; it does not mention iPad specifically, but Apple lists it there.

Sudoku Royale, our app, is a universal iPhone and iPad app. On iPad it rotates freely and redraws the board for portrait or landscape, and because its digits scale with the board, they are large on a tablet with no setting to change. It has no ads, no purchases and no subscription, which matters more on a screen where a full-screen ad is the size of a magazine page. Input works by tapping a cell and choosing a number, arming a number and tapping cells, or sliding across the grid. It does not claim hardware keyboard support. It is classic 9x9 only, with six levels, a Daily Challenge and an 88-level Journey. Get Sudoku Royale on your iPad.

Blocks and math: Woodoku, Crossmath, Arcadia Zen Math

Block puzzles are simple shapes on a 9x9 board, so they look fine on any screen; the iPad mostly gives your finger more room to drag. Crossmath and Arcadia Zen Math are math crosswords, and Arcadia's listing promises large numbers, which helps on either device. None of the three says anything about the iPad layout itself.

Running iPad apps on a Mac

Vita Mahjong, Crossmath, Arcadia Zen Math and Sudoku Royale list Mac compatibility. On Apple silicon Macs, Apple lets many iPad apps run as they are. That is the iPad app in a window, not a separate Mac version, so touch gestures become clicks. Sudoku Royale runs this way; our sudoku on Mac page has the details.

When Sudoku Royale is not the iPad pick

  • You want variety. One puzzle type, done carefully. A brain training app or a mix of puzzle apps gives you more kinds of game.
  • You want to type numbers on a keyboard. Sudoku Royale does not claim keyboard support; the sudoku iPad page names the app that does.
  • You want variants or a colour-blind mode. It has classic sudoku only and no colour-blind setting.
  • You switch to an Android tablet. Sudoku Royale is Apple-only.
