There is no native Mac version of Sudoku Royale. It is an iPad app, and Apple lists it for Macs with Apple silicon, which can run iPad apps. That is true of every Mac-compatible sudoku app we track: of 23, 14 list Mac compatibility, and all of them are iPad apps on the Mac. Among those, Sudoku Royale is the one with no ads and nothing to buy, and Good Sudoku is the strongest pick for experienced solvers. Sudoku.com, Brainium Sudoku and NYT Games are not listed for Mac, though NYT and Sudoku.com both have puzzles you can play in a browser.

How iPad apps run on a Mac
Since Apple moved its Macs to its own chips (M1 and later), a Mac can run most iPhone and iPad apps. You find them in the Mac App Store, and a sudoku app with Mac in its Compatibility section installs like any other app and opens in a window. Three things follow from that.
- Intel Macs are left out. If your Mac is from before Apple silicon, none of the apps on this page will install. Use a browser option instead.
- You play with a pointer. A click stands in for a tap. Apps designed for touch can feel slightly indirect with a mouse; a trackpad is closer to a finger.
- Developers choose. An iPad app only appears for Mac if its developer allows it, which is why some of the biggest sudoku apps are missing. The listing may also say "Not verified for macOS", meaning the developer has not confirmed it was tested there. Most of the apps here carry that note, Sudoku Royale included.
Mac-compatible on the US App Store: Sudoku Royale, Sudoku: Brain Puzzle Games, Sudoku by Staple Games, Tripledot Sudoku, Sudoku Color by MobilityWare, Sudoku Puzzle: Brain Games, Sudoku :), nerByte Sudoku, Sudoku: Classic Puzzle Games, Sudoku by Mind The Frog, Sudoku Master, Sudoku: Daily Puzzles, Good Sudoku and Sudoku Face Off. Not listed for Mac: Sudoku.com, Brainium Sudoku, PeopleFun Sudoku, Sudoku Blast!, Sudoku by MobilityWare+, Sudoku Puzzle World, Stress Free Sudoku, Sudoku Now! and NYT Games.
Sudoku Royale on a Mac
On a Mac you get the iPad app, with everything in it: unlimited Practice at six levels from Easy to Extreme, the Daily Challenge with its streak and archive, the 88-level Journey, and Dojo drills for techniques up to X-Wing and Swordfish. There are no ads and no purchases, so the larger screen is all board. Theme follows the system setting, or you can pick Light or Dark.
If you also play on iPhone or iPad, sign in with Apple, email or Game Center on each: progress syncs through your Sudoku Royale account rather than iCloud, so the Mac picks up your streak and stats.
The honest limits: it is not built for the Mac, the listing carries Apple's "Not verified for macOS" note, and the app does not advertise keyboard input, so expect to play with the pointer. If typing digits on a keyboard is how you want to play, a browser sudoku site is the better choice on a Mac.
Good Sudoku and Tripledot
Good Sudoku labels its puzzles by the techniques they need rather than a vague Easy or Hard, and its three daily modes get harder through the week. It is free to download with a Full Game Unlock purchase at $4.99; see Sudoku Royale vs Good Sudoku. Tripledot Sudoku's listing has unlimited undo and an optional mistake limit, two things Sudoku Royale does not offer. Both listings show "Designed for iPad" without the "Not verified for macOS" note.
Playing in a browser instead
On a Mac, a website is often the simplest sudoku of all, and it works on Intel Macs too. The New York Times publishes daily sudoku on its puzzles site, Sudoku.com has a web version, and sudoku.coach is a browser-based site built around solving techniques. A browser also means a real keyboard for entering digits. Sudoku Royale has no full web version; only its turn-based Clockwork game can be played in a browser, by a friend you invite. If you play on paper too, there is a printable sudoku page.
Where another option is the better pick
- You have an Intel Mac. Use a browser sudoku site.
- You want undo. Tripledot's listing has it; Sudoku Royale has none.
- You want to type numbers on the keyboard. A browser site is the safer bet than any iPad app on the Mac.
- You want a true Mac app with menus and windows. None of the apps we track is one.
Our pick
