Best Private Sudoku App: App Store Privacy Labels Compared

Of the 25 sudoku apps we track on the US App Store, 21 show a "Data Used to Track You" section on their privacy label. Only 4 do not: Sudoku Royale, Sudoku by MobilityWare+, Good Sudoku and Sudoku Face Off. Sudoku Royale is one of them: no tracking section, no ad SDK, no ads. It does collect data linked to you (your account, your games) to run features like the Daily Challenge leaderboard, and says so on its label. If you want the lightest label of all, Sudoku by MobilityWare+, Good Sudoku and Sudoku Face Off list only data not linked to you.

Every number in that paragraph is read from the listings when this page is built, not typed in, so it stays current. Below: what the labels mean, what each app declares, and where the labels stop being useful.

What Apple's privacy labels mean

Every App Store listing has an App Privacy section with up to three headings.

  • Data Used to Track You is data the app links with data from other companies' apps and websites, usually to target ads or measure them, or shares with data brokers. This is the heading that matters most for privacy, and in free games it usually means an advertising network is built in.
  • Data Linked to You is data tied to your identity: an account, a user ID, a device ID. Any app with accounts, cloud saves or leaderboards will have something here.
  • Data Not Linked to You is collected without being tied to who you are, typically crash reports and anonymous analytics.

Two things to keep in mind. First, the labels are self-declared. The listing itself says the information "has not been verified by Apple": developers fill in a questionnaire, and a careless or dishonest one can understate. Second, the headings do not say how much is collected, only which kinds. Tap a heading on the listing to see the categories underneath.

On iPhone and iPad, an app also has to ask your permission before it tracks you across other companies' apps and websites. You can refuse that for every app at once in Settings, under Privacy and Security, then Tracking.

Sudoku Royale's label, line by line

Sudoku Royale's listing has no "Data Used to Track You" section, and the app contains no advertising SDK, so there is nothing to target ads with. Under "Data Linked to You" it lists, for app functionality: user content, gameplay content, identifiers (a user ID and a device ID) and product interaction. That is what an app needs to keep your profile, your streak and your place on the Daily Challenge and Dojo leaderboards. Under "Data Not Linked to You" it lists usage data for analytics and diagnostics such as crash and performance data.

You can keep that to a minimum. You start as a guest with no email address, and if you do sign in, Sign in with Apple can hide your real address. Your date of birth is only asked for if you want the Brain Age figure. See the sudoku apps without an account for how sign-in works in each app.

So the honest summary: Sudoku Royale does not track you, but it is not a collect-nothing app. If your standard is "nothing linked to me at all", the apps below fit it better.

The other apps without a tracking section

Sudoku Face Off lists only data not linked to you. It is a small app built around live races; our Sudoku Royale vs Sudoku Face Off page compares them.

Sudoku by MobilityWare+ also lists only data not linked to you, and it has no ads because it is an Apple Arcade game. That makes it private and clean, but it is only free if you already pay for Arcade.

Good Sudoku lists only data not linked to you as well. Its label does include third-party advertising among the purposes for that unlinked data, so read it before assuming there are no ad partners. See Sudoku Royale vs Good Sudoku.

When the description and the label disagree

OAKEVER's Sudoku: Brain Puzzle Games says in its description that you can "play without interruptions or data tracking" and that it is "100% privacy friendly". Its privacy label nevertheless includes a "Data Used to Track You" section. Marketing copy is not a privacy policy. When the two differ, trust the label, and if privacy matters, read the developer's policy linked from the listing.

Where another app is the better pick

  • You want nothing linked to your identity. Sudoku by MobilityWare+, Good Sudoku and Sudoku Face Off declare only unlinked data.
  • You already pay for Apple Arcade. Sudoku by MobilityWare+ costs nothing extra and has a minimal label.
  • You want an app that never goes online. Sudoku Royale needs a connection for the daily, the Dojo and hints. See the offline sudoku apps.
  • You play on Android. Sudoku Royale is iPhone and iPad only, and these labels are Apple's.

Our pick

For a sudoku app with a full set of features, no tracking section, no ads and no purchases, download Sudoku Royale. For ad-free options more broadly, see the best sudoku apps with no ads, and every head-to-head is on the comparisons page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which sudoku apps do not track you?

Of the 25 sudoku apps we track, 4 have no "Data Used to Track You" section on their App Store privacy label: Sudoku Royale, Sudoku by MobilityWare+, Good Sudoku and Sudoku Face Off. The other 21 do.

Does Sudoku Royale collect my data?

Some. Its privacy label lists data linked to you for app functionality (user content, gameplay content, a user ID and device ID, product interaction) and unlinked usage and diagnostics data. It has no "Data Used to Track You" section and no ad SDK.

What does "Data Used to Track You" mean on the App Store?

It means the developer says the app links data about you with data from other companies' apps or websites, usually for targeted advertising or ad measurement, or shares it with data brokers. Apps have to ask your permission before tracking.

Are App Store privacy labels accurate?

They are self-declared by developers, and each listing notes that Apple has not verified them. They are a useful starting point, not a guarantee. Read the developer's privacy policy for detail.

How do I stop a sudoku app from tracking me?

Tap Ask App Not to Track when the app asks, or turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track in Settings, Privacy and Security, Tracking. Choosing an app with no tracking section on its label avoids the question.

Is a paid sudoku app more private than a free one?

Not necessarily. Price and privacy are separate. Sudoku Royale is free with no tracking section, while several free apps with ads do have one. Check the label, not the price. The other apps here without a tracking section are Sudoku by MobilityWare+, Good Sudoku and Sudoku Face Off.
