Sudoku Puzzle World by NewsLeap is a pretty, relaxed sudoku app with ads, four levels up to Expert and an ad removal upgrade at $9.99. If you are leaving because of the ads, Sudoku Royale has none and nothing to buy. If you want harder puzzles, Sudoku Royale and Good Sudoku both go well past Expert. If you want the same calm, scenic feel with hints that explain, Brainium Sudoku is the closest match.
Puzzle World has been on the App Store since 2014 and has 19,869 US ratings. Its 6.0 update added a lot: a Daily Puzzle with a monthly streak track, tournaments and events with global leaderboards, a Path mode with medallions and ribbons, iCloud sync and your own photos as backgrounds. So the question is less "is there something better" than "what do you want that it does not give you".

Leaving because of the ads
Puzzle World's age rating notes advertising, and its only listed purchase is "Upgrade with Permanent Ad Removal" at $9.99. That is a one-time payment, not a subscription, so if you love the app it is a fair way to keep it.
If you would rather not pay, Sudoku Royale is free with no ads, no purchases and no subscription, and you do not need an account to start. Be clear on the trade: it has none of Puzzle World's scenery. The board is a plain grid in light or dark, and there are no photo backgrounds, no iCloud sync (progress follows your Sudoku Royale account instead) and no undo. Try Sudoku Royale and see whether a quieter screen suits you.
If you pay for Apple Arcade, Sudoku by MobilityWare+ is ad-free at no extra cost. It uses colored grids and starts you on smaller puzzles, with a classic black and white board available. For more, see our list of sudoku apps with no ads.
Leaving because Expert got easy
Puzzle World stops at four levels, and Expert is the top. Once Expert stops being a challenge, you need an app with a higher ceiling.
Sudoku Royale adds Master and Extreme above Expert. Each unlocks after a number of solves at the level below, and the top levels need techniques like X-Wing and XY-Wing. When you get stuck, the hint names the technique instead of filling the cell, and the Dojo lets you drill each pattern on its own. Our guide to sudoku levels explains how the ladder works.
Good Sudoku goes deeper still. Its listing says its hardest puzzles need XYZ-Wings, Jellyfish and Swordfish, and it names the techniques each level requires. It sells a Full Game Unlock for $4.99.
Leaving for hints that explain
Puzzle World's listing does not describe its hints; a version note only says you can hide the hint and notes buttons. If you want to learn why a number goes where it does, Brainium Sudoku is the closest replacement in feel. It also leans on calm visuals (nine backdrops and two grid styles), and its hints explain the technique behind each move with animations. It shows ads until you buy Remove Ads ($11.99). nerByte Sudoku lists step-by-step explanatory hints and offline play, with Sudoku No Ads at $7.99.
Leaving because the buttons feel small
A review on Puzzle World's listing says the buttons are small and easy to miss. Its Large Puzzle Font setting enlarges the grid's digits, but not necessarily the keys. nerByte lists Display Zoom support for larger controls, and Brainium lets you change the font size. In Sudoku Royale, the board's digits grow with the cell rather than with your iPhone's text size, so an iPad gives you the biggest board; there is also a slide-to-select input if tapping small keys is the issue (see slide to select). Our guide for older players compares readability in more detail.
When to stay with Puzzle World
- The scenery is why you play. Over 80 backgrounds and your own photos; none of the apps above lists anything similar.
- You play on several Apple devices. iCloud sync carries your progress across them.
- You like collecting. Trophies, ribbons, medallions and an awards cabinet give long-term goals.
- You want a reminder. Daily reminders keep a streak going.
