Woodoku Alternatives, With and Without Ads

Woodoku is Tripledot Studios' wood block puzzle: drag pieces onto a 9x9 board and clear rows, columns and squares before you run out of space. It is free with ads, and its listing sells numbered "Packages" without saying what is in them. For the same game in another skin, try Blockudoku or Playdoku. For something just as calm with no random pieces, Vita Mahjong and Nonogram.com are good fits, and Tripledot's own Sudoku or Sudoku Royale (free, no ads) give you the real puzzle behind the grid.

Woodoku came out in 2020 and has 665,754 US ratings. People who leave it tend to say one of three things: the ads got to be too much, the purchases felt unclear, or the endless high-score loop stopped being fun. The right alternative depends on which one it was.

Calm, offline and how each one charges

Woodoku's listing makes two promises: it is relaxing and it plays offline. This table checks the alternatives on those two points, and on what they ask you to pay for. "Not stated" means the listing is silent, not that the feature is missing.

About those Woodoku packages

The paid items on Woodoku's App Store listing are named by number only: Package 2 $1.99, Package 5 $4.99, Package 19 $18.99, and more up the scale. The listing does not say whether any of them remove ads or what else they unlock. That does not mean they are a bad deal; it means you only find out in the app. If you want to know exactly what you are paying for, the alternatives with plainly named items (an ad removal, a coin pack, or nothing at all) are easier to judge.

The same game, different feel

Blockudoku

Easybrain's version plays the same way on the same 9x9 board, without the wood theme. It adds Daily Challenges, Seasonal Events and Tournaments. It shows ads, and unlike Woodoku it has one obvious way out of them: Blockudoku No Ads for $14.99. Our Blockudoku alternatives page covers it in depth.

Playdoku

Burny Games' take adds a Journey of levels and a Challenging mode that ramps up, alongside a relaxed Classic mode. Good if the open-ended high-score run is what wore you out. It sells coin packs and bundles.

Tripledot Sudoku: same studio, real sudoku

Woodoku's listing calls it a twist on classic sudoku. If you want the original, Tripledot makes that too. Its Sudoku has four levels (Easy to Expert), notes that update as you play, unlimited undo, auto-check you can switch off, an optional three-mistake limit and six skins. It shows ads, and its listing shows no purchase to remove them. Our Tripledot Sudoku alternatives page compares its settings with other sudoku apps.

Sudoku Royale: sudoku with no ads to manage

If ads were the problem, Sudoku Royale removes the question: no ads, no purchases, no subscription. It is classic sudoku with six levels from Easy to Extreme, a Daily Challenge with streaks, and hints that show you where to look and which technique applies rather than filling in the number.

On Woodoku's offline promise, be aware of the details. Practice puzzles you have already downloaded play without a connection, and Journey levels play offline once the map has loaded. The Daily Challenge, hints and the drills need the internet. There is no undo, and a timer shows in the corner even though nothing counts down. It is iPhone and iPad only. Live games with friends exist, and you never have to touch them.

Calm without random pieces

Vita Mahjong

Mahjong solitaire: clear the board by matching pairs of free tiles. Its listing leans hard on calm, with large, readable tiles, play without a timer or score pressure, free hints, undo and shuffle, and full offline support. It shows ads; its listing sells Mahjong Ads Remove for $5.99 and also weekly, monthly and yearly subscriptions.

Nonogram.com

You shade squares from number clues on each row and column until a picture appears. Like sudoku, every square can be deduced, so there is no bad luck to recover from. It has hints, auto-crosses, extra lives, daily challenges and tournaments, and it is free with ads.

Where Woodoku is still the better pick

  • You like the wood. The look and sound are the whole appeal for many players, and none of the alternatives copy them.
  • Offline is a must and you want blocks. Woodoku is the only block game here whose listing says it plays offline.
  • Zero learning curve. Drag, drop, clear. Sudoku and nonograms reward learning a few patterns, which some people enjoy and some do not.
  • Android. Woodoku is on Android; Sudoku Royale is not.

Choosing

Pick Blockudoku for the same game with a single ad removal purchase, Playdoku for levels, Vita Mahjong for the calmest session, and Nonogram.com for logic with a picture at the end. If the 9x9 grid is what you liked, give the puzzle it came from a go: download Sudoku Royale, start on Easy, and let the Journey teach you a technique at a time. The other comparisons are on the sudoku app comparisons page, including the best offline sudoku apps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Woodoku work offline?

Its App Store listing says it is playable offline.

What are the Woodoku packages?

Woodoku's listing sells items named only by number (Package 2 $1.99, Package 5 $4.99, Package 19 $18.99 and others). It does not describe what each contains, so check the in-app store before buying.

Is Woodoku sudoku?

No. Woodoku uses a sudoku-style 9x9 grid, but you place wooden block shapes to clear rows, columns and squares. There are no numbers. Tripledot Studios, its maker, also publishes a classic Sudoku app.

What is the difference between Woodoku and Blockudoku?

They play the same way on a 9x9 grid. Woodoku has a wooden look and is made by Tripledot Studios; Blockudoku is made by Easybrain and adds tournaments and seasonal events. Blockudoku's listing sells "Blockudoku No Ads" for $14.99, while Woodoku's sells numbered packages.

What is a relaxing game like Woodoku?

Vita Mahjong is built around calm play, with large tiles and no timer pressure. Nonogram.com and sudoku apps are calm too, and they have no random pieces, so you are never stuck with a block that does not fit.

Does Sudoku Royale work offline?

Partly. Practice works offline with the puzzles already downloaded for a level, and Journey levels play offline after the map has loaded once. The Daily Challenge, hints, drills and live games need a connection.
