Best Sudoku Apps With Dark Mode for Night Play

Many sudoku apps now list a dark theme, so the useful questions are whether it follows your iPhone's own dark mode, and whether an ad will flash a bright screen at you halfway through a late-night puzzle. Sudoku Royale and Brainium Sudoku both follow the system setting automatically; Sudoku Royale has no ads at all, while Brainium shows ads unless you pay to remove them. Guru's Sudoku, Sudoku Now!, OAKEVER's Sudoku and Sudoku Master all list a dark theme too.

Dark mode, app by app

The "Dark Interface" column is one of Apple's accessibility labels: a statement the developer makes on the App Store listing that the app supports a dark look. Few sudoku apps have filled those labels in yet, ours included, so a blank there does not mean the app has no dark theme. The "How the listing describes it" column is what each developer says in its own words.

Why ads matter more in the dark

A dark theme only covers the app's own screens. An ad is someone else's video or banner, and it usually arrives bright, loud and full-screen, often just after you finish a puzzle. At night that is the moment the whole room lights up. So for night play, a dark theme in an app with ads is only half the answer. Brainium, Guru, OAKEVER and Sudoku Master all note advertising in their App Store age rating; Sudoku Now! sells a No-Ads Pack, which means its free version has ads. Most of them sell a way out (Brainium's Remove Ads is $11.99). Sudoku Royale has no ads to remove, so the dark theme holds from start to finish.

Sudoku Royale's themes

Settings has three choices: System, Light and Dark. System follows your iPhone or iPad, so if you use Apple's automatic dark mode at sunset the app switches with it. Dark keeps it dark all day.

Two settings help at night alongside it. Highlight Same Number lights up every matching digit, which saves you scanning a dim board cell by cell. Music and sound effects have separate toggles, so you can play in bed without a sound. Haptics stay on unless you turn off vibration for the whole phone. The app also respects Reduce Motion. On an iPad the board fills the screen, so you can keep the brightness low and still read it: see the best sudoku apps for iPad.

What it does not have: a choice of colors beyond light and dark, or a color-blind mode. If you want a sepia, gray or custom palette, the apps with "themes" in their listings are a better match.

The others in brief

  • Brainium Sudoku is the most complete on looks: auto light/dark, nine backdrops, two grid styles, and grid fonts with adjustable size. Compared in full on Sudoku Royale vs Brainium.
  • Guru's Sudoku Puzzle: Brain Games pitches its dark theme for playing before bed and lists unlimited undo. It sells Pro plans and hint packs; see Sudoku Royale vs Guru Sudoku.
  • Sudoku Now! has light and dark mode, five levels up to Master and unlimited undo, and plays offline.
  • OAKEVER's Sudoku: Brain Puzzle Games combines dark mode with seasonal themes, killer and letter sudoku.
  • Sudoku Master has light and dark themes plus 6x6 and 16x16 grids, fully offline.

Of the apps here, Sudoku Puzzle: Brain Games and Sudoku: Classic Puzzle Games declare Apple's Dark Interface accessibility label on the listing.

Where another app is the better pick

  • You want more than two looks. Brainium's backdrops and OAKEVER's themes give you choice; Sudoku Royale is light or dark.
  • You want bigger digits in the dark. Brainium lets you change the grid font size. Sudoku Royale's board digits scale with the cell, not with the iPhone text size.
  • You want undo at 1 a.m. Guru, Sudoku Now! and OAKEVER list it; Sudoku Royale has none.
  • You want to play offline in bed. Sudoku Master and Sudoku Now! say they play without an internet connection. Sudoku Royale's Practice works offline with puzzles already downloaded, but the Daily Challenge needs a connection (see the offline sudoku apps).

Tips for playing sudoku at night

Use the dark theme and lower the brightness until white text no longer glares. Turn on Night Shift in iPhone Settings to warm the colors. Silence the app. Pick an easier level than usual: a tired brain makes more slips, and you want to finish, not lie awake on a stuck Expert grid. If you like to wind down this way, our relaxing sudoku apps page looks at timers, mistake limits and sound. To try it, get Sudoku Royale and set the theme to Dark or System. Every other matchup is on the sudoku app comparisons page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Sudoku Royale have dark mode?

Yes. Settings has System, Light and Dark. System follows your iPhone or iPad's own appearance setting, and Dark keeps the app dark all the time.

Which sudoku apps follow the iPhone's dark mode automatically?

Sudoku Royale (with the System option) and Brainium Sudoku, whose listing describes an Auto Light/Dark mode based on device settings. The other apps we checked list a dark theme but do not say whether it switches automatically.

Does Sudoku.com have dark mode?

Its App Store description does not mention one, so we have left it out of this comparison rather than guess.

Is a dark theme better for your eyes?

It is more comfortable in a dark room because the screen gives off less light. In bright daylight a light theme is often easier to read. Use whichever feels better, and lower the brightness at night either way.

Which sudoku app has dark mode and no ads?

Sudoku Royale has a dark theme and no ads, with nothing to buy. Brainium Sudoku has auto dark mode and sells Remove Ads for $11.99.

What is the Dark Interface label on the App Store?

It is one of Apple's accessibility labels. Developers declare on the listing that their app supports a dark interface for its common tasks. Many apps, Sudoku Royale included, have not filled in these labels yet, so check the app's description too.
