Sudoku Hints: How to Use Them Without Spoiling the Puzzle

A sudoku hint can do two very different things. It can give you the answer (this cell is a 4), or it can point you at the logic (there is a hidden single in this box). The first gets you unstuck and teaches you nothing. The second gets you unstuck and makes you a better solver. If you want to improve, use hints that name a technique and let you finish the move yourself.

The three kinds of sudoku hint

• Reveal the digit. The app fills a cell for you. Fast, but you never see why, and the same situation will stop you next time.
• Show the cell. The app highlights a cell you can solve now. Better: you still have to work out the digit, which means you still have to find the logic.
• Name the technique. The app tells you which technique works on the board right now, like "Pointing" or "Naked Pair", and you go find it. This is the most useful kind for learning, because the search is the skill.

How hints work in Sudoku Royale

Hints live in Practice, the untimed mode with unlimited puzzles at every difficulty. There is a small bulb in the corner of the board. If you go 90 seconds without a correct placement, it lights up. You can also tap it at any time.

The hint names a technique that works on the board as it stands, with one plain sentence about how it works. For example, for a hidden single: "One number cannot go anywhere else in its row, column or box but this square." If the move is a single, the cell is highlighted too. The app never fills in the digit for you.

It always suggests the easiest kind of move available. If a single exists, you get a single, not an X-Wing. That mirrors how good solvers work, and it trains you to check the cheap moves first. If the board needs something beyond the patterns the hint covers, it says so: "No basic move here. This one needs an advanced technique."

Every hint card has a Learn button that opens the lesson for that technique: the idea in a line, why the move is forced, and a step-by-step board with the key cells marked. Hints need a connection. Offline, the bulb shows "Connect to get a tip".

How to use hints without spoiling the puzzle

1. Wait before you ask. Most stalls are a missed single, and a second scan finds it. Give yourself a minute or two. Sudoku Royale waits 90 seconds before it offers.
2. Take the technique name, then stop reading. Once you know you are looking for a naked pair, go and find it. Only look at the highlight if you really cannot.
3. Note which techniques you needed. If three hints in a week say "Hidden Single", your scanning is the gap, not your knowledge of hard patterns.

Hints vs checking for mistakes

A hint tells you what to do next. Mistake checking tells you whether what you already did was right. Sudoku Royale has both, separately: you can turn on auto-check to flag wrong entries as you go, or switch it off and solve clean. If your hints keep pointing at moves that look impossible, a wrong digit earlier is the likely cause. Turn on auto-check for a moment and look.

Is using hints cheating?

Not in a solo puzzle. It is your puzzle, and a technique hint is closer to a coach looking over your shoulder than to looking up the answer. If you want your times to mean something, keep hints for Practice and solve the daily puzzle without them.
