Sudoku Royale vs OAKEVER Sudoku: Variants, Ads and Pricing

Sudoku: Brain Puzzle Games by OAKEVER packs more into one app than Sudoku Royale does: killer and letter sudoku, undo and redo, themes, full offline play, an interface in 62 languages and real-time multiplayer tournaments. Its pricing is harder to read. The listing promises an "Ad-Free Game Environment", yet its age rating notes advertising and it sells a Remove Ads purchase ($4.99) alongside weekly, monthly and yearly subscriptions. Sudoku Royale does less, classic sudoku only and English only, but it has no ads, no purchases and no subscription, plus lessons that teach harder techniques.

OAKEVER's app has been on the App Store since 2018 and has 313,688 US ratings. Sudoku Royale launched in 2026, so it has a fraction of that. Below is what each app offers, what each one costs, and who is better served by which.

The ad-free claim, and what the listing actually sells

This is the part worth reading before you download. OAKEVER's description lists "Ad-Free Game Environment: Play without interruptions or data tracking" as a key feature. The same App Store page says something different in three places: the age rating box notes that the app contains advertising, the privacy label lists data used for third-party advertising, and the in-app purchases include "Remove Ads" at $4.99.

We cannot tell from the listing which part is current. One plausible reading is that the free version shows ads and the paid options remove them, but the listing does not say which purchase unlocks what. The subscriptions it shows are: Sudoku Weekly Subscription $1.99, Sudoku Monthly Subscription $4.99, Sudoku Yearly Subscription $15.99. It also sells battle tickets (tickets_3 $2.99, Battle tickets *30 $0.99, Battle Tickets *100 $1.99), and the listing does not explain what they are for. Check the app's purchase screen before you pay for anything.

Sudoku Royale's answer is short: no ads, no in-app purchases, no subscription, and no tickets for live games. Its only shop sells avatar outfits for shurikens, which you earn by solving. Our best sudoku apps with no ads page lists other apps that are ad-free without a catch.

More variety, or more depth

If you get bored of the classic grid, OAKEVER has the edge. Its listing offers killer sudoku, where cages of cells add up to a target sum, and letter sudoku, which swaps digits for letters. Sudoku Royale has neither, nor diagonal or jigsaw grids; our guide to sudoku variants explains how they differ.

Sudoku Royale goes deeper on the one puzzle it has. Practice runs six levels, two of them above Expert. The Journey teaches a technique per chapter, from first steps to XY-Wing, and the Dojo drills patterns like naked pairs and Swordfish on a timer. Its hint stops short of the answer: it highlights the cell and names the technique, and links to the lesson.

Both have live play; it costs differently

OAKEVER's listing says "multiplayer tournaments are now live", with global leaderboards. Sudoku Royale has optional live games too: duels, a Battle Royale on one shared grid and knockout tournaments, rated with Elo, plus unrated games with friends or with people nearby over Bluetooth. In Royale they are free and never needed; most players use it as a solo app. Given the battle tickets in OAKEVER's purchase list, check whether its tournaments need them before you count on playing for free.
