Sudoku Royale vs Sudoku Puzzle World: Scenery or Depth?

Sudoku Puzzle World is the prettier app: changing landscape backgrounds, your own photos behind the grid, iCloud sync and a cabinet of trophies to fill. It is free with ads, and a one-time upgrade at $9.99 removes them. Sudoku Royale is the deeper one: six levels instead of four, hints that name a technique, lessons and drills, and faster ways to enter numbers. It has no ads and nothing to buy, but a plain board and no undo.

Pick Sudoku Puzzle World if the look of the screen is part of why you play. Pick Royale if you have outgrown Expert or want to understand why each number goes where it does.

Two different ideas of a good sudoku app

Sudoku Puzzle World has been on the App Store since 2014 and leans on atmosphere. Its listing opens with "the most beautiful Sudoku puzzles ever", and reviewers single out the landscapes that change with every game. Its 6.0 update turned it into a collecting game as well: a monthly streak track, a Path mode, ribbons and an awards cabinet. A later fix added a setting that switches off the confetti and sparkles for a calmer finish.

Sudoku Royale puts nothing behind the grid. The board follows your phone's light or dark setting, or you pick one. The effort goes into the solving: what level you are ready for, which technique you are missing, and how quickly you can enter what you have found. If you like a quiet screen, see our dark mode sudoku apps.

When Expert is no longer hard

Sudoku Puzzle World stops at Expert. That is plenty for many players, and one reviewer describes playing constantly to work up to it. Once it stops being a stretch, though, there is no level above.

Royale has Master and Extreme above Expert, each unlocked after a number of solves at the level below. The hardest puzzles call for patterns like the X-Wing and Swordfish. When you stall for about 90 seconds in Practice, the hint bulb lights, marks a cell and names the technique, then links to its lesson, so you learn the move rather than copy a number. The Dojo lets you drill one pattern at a time until you see it without help. Hints and the Dojo need a connection.

Entering numbers quickly

One reviewer on Sudoku Puzzle World's listing wishes they could select a number once and drop it into several cells without tapping the number again each time. Another found the buttons small and easy to miss on a phone. Its Large Puzzle Font setting makes the grid's digits bigger.

Royale handles the first wish directly. You can arm a number and tap every cell it belongs in, hold a number key and swipe along the bar, or slide across the grid to choose a cell. Our guide to number-first and cell-first entry explains when each is faster. On the other hand, Royale's digits grow with the cell, not with your text size setting, so on a small phone the board does not get bigger.

Keeping score

Both apps let you measure yourself. Sudoku Puzzle World has Game Center achievements, global leaderboards, tournaments and limited-time events, and a recent update added leaderboards for puzzle completions. Royale ranks every Daily Challenge against friends and the world, keeps your best streak, and runs a weekly Belts league fed by every solve. It also tracks speed, accuracy and consistency on a skills radar. Live matches against other players exist if you want them, and you can ignore them entirely.

What you pay

Sudoku Puzzle World lists one purchase, "Upgrade with Permanent Ad Removal", at $9.99. Pay once and the ads are gone for good. Apple's privacy label for the free version includes "Data Used to Track You". One long-time player also complains on the listing about being asked for a review again and again.

Royale charges nothing at any point and needs no account to start. Get Sudoku Royale on the App Store and play a few Practice puzzles at your current level to compare.

Where Sudoku Puzzle World is the better pick

  • Scenery matters to you. You can solve on top of your own photos; Royale has nothing like it.
  • You switch between iPhone and iPad. iCloud sync handles it without a separate sign-in.
  • You want control over effects. It lets you switch off haptics and win animations; Royale has no in-app haptics switch.
  • You like a daily nudge. It sends daily reminders.
  • You want a long track record. 19,869 US ratings, against Royale's 11.

Where Sudoku Royale is the better pick

  • You have outgrown Expert. Two more levels wait above it.
  • You want to learn techniques. Hints, the Journey and the Dojo teach them step by step.
  • You enter numbers in runs. Number-first and swipe input save taps.
  • You do not want to pay to remove ads.

Bottom line

Sudoku Puzzle World is a lovely place to do a medium puzzle each morning, and its upgrade price is fair if you stay. Sudoku Royale is the one to grow with. If you are ready to leave Sudoku Puzzle World rather than compare it, our Sudoku Puzzle World alternatives group the options by reason, and the comparisons hub has every other matchup.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Sudoku Puzzle World cost?

It is free with ads. "Upgrade with Permanent Ad Removal" costs $9.99, a one-time purchase. Sudoku Royale is free with no ads and no purchases.

Does Sudoku Puzzle World have hints?

Yes. A hint button arrived in version 5.1, and a later update lets you hide the hint and notes buttons. Its listing does not say how the hints work. Sudoku Royale's hint names the technique and the cell, not the number, and links to a lesson.

Which app is harder?

Sudoku Royale. Puzzle World tops out at Expert; Royale adds Master and Extreme, whose puzzles need techniques such as X-Wing, Swordfish and XY-Wing.

Can I use my own photos as a sudoku background?

In Sudoku Puzzle World, yes, plus over 80 built-in backgrounds and wallpaper packs. Sudoku Royale has only System, Light and Dark themes.

Does either app sync across devices?

Puzzle World uses iCloud sync. Sudoku Royale syncs through your Sudoku Royale account (Sign in with Apple, email or Game Center), not iCloud.

Is Sudoku Puzzle World a good app?

It holds 4.8 from 19,869 ratings on the US App Store and has been around since 2014. Reviewers praise the backgrounds and the notes; complaints on its listing include small buttons and repeated review prompts.
