With Lumosity, the games are the free part and the plan is what you pay for: its listing says Lumosity Premium brings the personalized training program, in-depth insights and tips. If you want a plan like that for less, look at MindPal (it lists a lifetime option) or Peak. If you are tired of being scored against your age group, a logic puzzle is the clean break: Sudoku Royale is free with no ads and no subscription, and Good Sudoku is a one-time unlock. Before you switch, know that Lumosity's listing is the cleanest of the big trainers on ads and tracking, so most of its rivals are a step back on that front.
Lumosity has been on the App Store since 2013. Its description says it turns established cognitive tasks into games, lists 40+ of them, and starts you with a free 10-minute Fit Test that sets your baseline and compares it with others your age. This page is about the two things that usually push people away: what Premium costs, and the constant measuring.

What Premium is, per the listing
The paid items on Lumosity's listing are all subscriptions, among them Lumosity Premium $11.99, Lumosity Premium $89.00, Lumosity Premium $54.99, Lumosity Premium $69.99. The description puts three things behind Premium: a personalized training program, in-depth insights about how you play, and tips for accuracy, speed and strategy. It also says that any unused part of a free trial is forfeited when you buy. Without Premium you keep the Fit Test and whatever the free version includes; the listing does not spell that part out, so try it before you decide the subscription is what you are paying for.
Ads, tracking and scoring, side by side
Two columns come straight from each App Store listing: the advertising note in the age rating box, and whether the privacy section has a "Data Used to Track You" heading. Both are declared by the developer. The last column is how each app says it compares your results.
| App | Advertising noted in age rating | "Data Used to Track You" on listing | How it compares your results |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lumosity | No | No | Fit Test baseline against your age group |
| Peak | Yes | Yes | Scores against your age range and profession |
| MindPal | Yes | Yes | Brain scores against other users |
| Elevate | Yes | Yes | Your own performance over time, weekly reports |
| Impulse | Yes | Yes | Your own trends, plus IQ and personality tests |
| Sudoku Royale | No, and no ads in the app | No | Daily leaderboard (friends and world), your own stats |
| Good Sudoku | No | No | Global leaderboards on daily puzzles |
| Nonogram.com | Yes | Yes | None described |
Peak, MindPal, Elevate, Impulse all note advertising. Peak, MindPal, Elevate, Impulse list data used to track you. If those things are why you value Lumosity, switching to another trainer to save money is a trade, not an upgrade.
If you want the plan, for less
MindPal
MindPal's listing describes a personalized daily workout from over 40 games and 1,000 levels across memory, attention, language, math, flexibility, speed and problem solving, with insights and score comparisons. Pro unlocks all games and advanced insights. It is the only trainer here whose description lists a lifetime plan next to the monthly and yearly ones, which is the most direct answer to a renewal you are tired of.
Peak
Peak lists 45+ games in six categories, daily workouts, short "Coffee Break" sessions and Advanced Training modules made with scientists and universities. Its insights compare you with others in your age range and profession, so if the benchmarking is what bothers you, Peak has more of it, not less. Its paid items include Peak Pro Plan $4.99, Peak Pro Plan $34.99, Peak pro $34.99.
Elevate
Elevate measures you against yourself: weekly reports and a workout calendar with streaks. Its games lean toward reading, writing, vocabulary and everyday math, which is a different mix from Lumosity's speed and attention games. See Elevate alternatives for how its plan works.
If you want to stop being measured
Every training app above is built on scores: a baseline, a percentile, a trend line. Some people find that motivating. Others find that it turns a pleasant ten minutes into an exam. A puzzle with a clear end gives you the same sitting-down-to-think moment without a verdict on your brain at the end of it.
Sudoku Royale
Our app, so weigh this accordingly. It is classic sudoku with no ads, no purchases and no subscription; you can play as a guest. Practice has unlimited puzzles at six levels with no mistake limit and no countdown. It does keep score in places, and we would rather you hear it from us: a timer shows during play and cannot be hidden, the Daily Challenge has a leaderboard, and the profile has a skills radar and a "Brain Age" figure if you give your date of birth. Those are statistics about your sudoku games, nothing more, and nothing forces you to look at them. The weekly belt league is optional too.
Good Sudoku
Zach Gage's app has no advertising note on its listing and sells a Full Game Unlock for $4.99. Its listing describes optional tools that cut busywork and hints that teach the next technique. Its daily modes have global leaderboards, and the rest of the game is you and the grid.
Nonogram.com
A picture puzzle with no score against anyone: shade squares from number clues until an image appears. It shows ads and sells Nonogram.com No Ads for $14.99. On tracking it is the opposite of Lumosity: its privacy section lists data used to track you.
When Lumosity is still the right app
- You like a measured baseline. The Fit Test and age-group comparison are what Lumosity is built around; puzzle apps have nothing like it.
- You want variety by skill. Picking speed, memory, attention, flexibility, problem solving, math or word games on demand is something no single puzzle can do.
- Ads and tracking matter more to you than price. Among the trainers here, its listing is the only one without an advertising note or a tracking heading.
We make no claims about what any of these apps does for memory or attention outside the game. For more, see sudoku for brain training, the most private sudoku apps, Peak alternatives and the whole set on sudoku app comparisons. To try a puzzle with nothing to subscribe to, download Sudoku Royale.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Lumosity Premium include?
Its App Store listing says Premium gives you a personalized training program, in-depth insights about how you play, and tips for better accuracy, speed and strategy. The free 10-minute Fit Test does not need Premium.
Does Lumosity have ads?
Its App Store age rating has no advertising note, and its privacy section has no 'Data Used to Track You' heading. Both are declared by the developer, so they are a strong hint rather than proof.
Is there a cheaper alternative to Lumosity?
MindPal lists a lifetime Pro plan alongside monthly and yearly ones, which can work out cheaper if you plan to keep training for years. If you will settle for one puzzle instead of 40 games, Sudoku Royale is free with nothing to buy, and Good Sudoku is a one-time unlock.
Which brain app does not compare you with other people?
Elevate's listing describes tracking your own performance over time rather than ranking you against others. Among the puzzle apps, Nonogram.com describes no score comparison at all. Sudoku Royale ranks you on the Daily Challenge leaderboard, in the weekly belt league and in live matches, all of which you can ignore.
How do I cancel Lumosity Premium?
Through your Apple ID subscriptions in Settings, as with any App Store subscription. Its listing says auto-renewal must be turned off at least 24 hours before the current period ends, and that unused time is not refunded.
Is sudoku a good substitute for Lumosity?
It is a different thing: one logic puzzle in depth instead of many short games by skill. If you used Lumosity for the daily habit, a daily puzzle can fill that slot. If you used it for the measurements, you will miss them.
